What is Net Neutrality?
If you have been on the web in the past few years then you have no doubt heard this term before. The simplest definition that I have found online is by Professor Tim Wu of Columbia Law. Professor Wu state ” to describe the concept that internet service providers should treat all data on the Internet the same and not block, speed up or slow down traffic based on paid prioritization or other preferences.”
I found a video by ABC that does a great job of creating a visual for net neutrality.
Why Should You Care?
You should care so you can make your own decision online and not have sites filtered through your ISP. Instead of being shoveled internet content that is pushed by monopolies you would have the ability to be your own gatekeeper. Another reason why you should care is cutting out a middleman for a service you already pay for. Without net neutrality in place, you risk the threat of content blocking, content throttling, and paid content prioritization.
The process I took to research was looking through all of the databases that I have access too. I googled and searched the UAF digital catalog. I gathered my information looked everything over. I tried to distill everything into an easily readable length, put my own opinion into the post, and include a video that I thought had a great visualization method.
ADA Fire Away Questions:
1: Has learning about ADA and IDEA changed anything in the way you plan lessons?
2: What has changed in any of your own internal definitions of “disability”, “reasonable accommodation”, and “universal design”? If this was your first time hearing these terms have they made you think differently about anything else in your daily life?
3: What accommodations have you seen in place in the classroom? Did you realize that they were taking place?
Reflection on “Collaborate (a little)” Assignment:
This has been a difficult collection. When I signed up for this class I was expecting a more solo driven lesson plan that would use online resources and videos. I didn’t expect to have to orchestrate assignments and interactions with people who are also busy. This assignment was kinda rough. While I eventually found a group thanks to the wonders of twitter this collection has thrown me through a loop.
I think you required it because experiences teach more than paragraphs and you wanted us to make connections through the web and use that connection to create something productive.
If I could time travel I would tell students to not take this class if they have a day job or at least warn them about the expectations of the group interactions.
Productivity is one of the great universal challenges that everyone has to face on their own. To try and increase my productivity I have been carrying around a pocket-sized notebook and pen. With these tools readily available I have been taking more notes during my daily life. I am a habitual hand writer. I often write notes on my hand in order to keep track of an idea through a given work day. By carrying around a piece of paper my hands do not have anything written on them and I am able to take more vivid and detailed notes.
( Hand is free of sharpie notes! )
- Wealth of Networks, Chapter 5, Section 2 – “Autonomy, Property, and Commons” (paragraphs 273-278)
- Chapter 8 – “A Creative Commons” from The Public Domain
- About Creative Commons Licenses (including the video)
- Creative Commons Kiwi
I made a how to make a cup of tea that I posted to youtube.
I chose CCBYNC because this form of the license lets people take my work and alter it in a creative way that is non-commercial. It also requires remixers to acknowledge that I am the original creator of the media.
Scenario 1: The Bad
A digital musician likes the way I set my mug down at the 9-second mark. They take out that sound clip from the video and uses it for a high hat sound and make a multi-billion dollar top of the chart single using sound from my video as an instrument. That breaks the copyright license because it is taking my work not crediting the sound they took from it and using it in a commercial way.
Scenario 2: The Good
An editor wants to practice their editing skills. They stumble upon my tea making video and are determined to edit into a horror film. After they alter and create ” Attack of tea: A mugging tale” they include me as the original creator of the video. Since it is just a practice project the editor doesn’t try to sell the remixed video as her own.

The assigned task is to teach the class about an interest that I have while using copyrighted materials as references. With the goal being stated I want to show the class a method of brewing a pot of coffee.
I will start this lesson by showing the video below on how to make coffee.
This video reference that I found was created by Foldgers. I chose this source because it is a well-known coffee company with knowledge on how to use their own product. My reason for showing this video as opposed to just recording myself brewing a pot of coffee is because I would like to use this opportunity to improve my familiarity with using obviously copyrighted materials in an academic setting.
Fair Use Defense with the Four Factors:
The Purpose and Character of Use – The purpose of this video is to educate people on a widly spread method of brewing a pot of coffee. The use of the video would be for the purpose of education.
The Nature of the Work – The nature of the work seems to be with education in mind. It is a video on how to create a pot of coffee. As my own goals are aligned with the nature of the work I think that my use passes the second factor of the fair use defense.
The Amount/Substance of the Work – I took the whole video. I didn’t cut anything out because it is a good reference. I also didn’t want to create a list which would go against the purpose of this assignment.
The Effect on Real or Potential Market Value – I am not depriving Foldgers of any coffee sales. In fact, I could argue that by showing people this as a reference on making a pot of coffee I am advertising for Foldgers. I am also not making any money on their work.
